Burwood is one of the best places to eat in Sydney, full stop — a few blocks where you can travel across half of Asia on foot, and rarely spend more than $20. Here's how a regular navigates it, cuisine by cuisine.
Chinese: noodles & dumplings
The backbone of Burwood. For hand-pulled noodles (lamian), find a Lanzhou-style shop and order the beef noodle soup — watch them stretch the dough to order. For dumplings, go Shanghainese: xiao long bao (soup dumplings — bite, sip, then eat) and pan-fried sheng jian bao. Northern Chinese spots also do a mean plate of cumin lamb and hand-torn noodles.
Korean: BBQ & fried chicken
Korean BBQ is Burwood's group sport — book a table with a built-in grill, order pork belly and marinated beef, and cook it yourself between the banchan. Not in a cooking mood? Korean fried chicken (get it half soy-garlic, half spicy) and a stew like budae jjigae are the move.
Hot pot: the winter ritual
When it's cold, hot pot rules. Pick a divided pot (mild broth one side, mala the other), then order thin-sliced wagyu, fish, tofu and greens to swish through the bubbling stock. It's interactive, generous and goes late — peak Burwood.
Thai & Vietnamese
For a quick, cheap, brilliant feed, the Thai shops do fragrant curries, pad see ew and boat noodles (ask for it "Thai spicy" if you mean it). The Vietnamese pho shops are the hangover (and any-day) hero — a deep beef broth, rice-paper rolls and an iced coffee to finish.
What to drink
Many of the best cheap eats are BYO or unlicensed — but the real Burwood pairing is a bubble tea or a dessert afterward. Don't fill up entirely; the dessert run is half the fun (see our bubble tea & dessert guide).
How to do it like a regular
- Cash helps. Some small shops are cash-only or card-surcharge — carry a little.
- Go off-peak or queue. The best spots are busy; arrive early or embrace the line.
- Order family-style. More dishes, shared, beats one each — and you taste more.
- Save room for dessert. Always.
